Methodology

Recall data sources

RecallRoute reads public campaign and vehicle option data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Primary source

Recall records, vehicle makes, and vehicle models are requested from the public NHTSA API at api.nhtsa.gov. RecallRoute does not alter the official campaign number, manufacturer summary, safety consequence, or remedy text.

Refresh schedule

  • Recall campaign responses are refreshed at least hourly.
  • Vehicle make and model option lists are refreshed daily.
  • Each record page displays the date on which its cached data was checked.

Coverage and limitations

Searches use model year, make, and model. A returned campaign does not mean every vehicle with those details is affected, and an empty result does not replace a VIN-level check. Campaign eligibility can depend on production date, equipment, assembly plant, or other manufacturer criteria.

Vehicle-specific verification

Confirm a specific vehicle through the official NHTSA VIN lookup, the vehicle manufacturer, or an authorized dealer.
